About this matchbox

The May Fair Hotel today remains one of the most iconic historic hotels in London, it was inaugurated in 1927 by King George V and Queen Mary. The building was designed to impress from the start with its more than 400 rooms, large ballrooms and event spaces, decoration inspired by the art deco style, very fashionable in the 1920s. Its main clientele consisted of aristocrats, artists, and international celebrities. Additionally, it has been a hotel that survived World War II, adapting to the social and economic changes of London.

To date the box, we also consider the design style of the British Caledonian advertisement inside the box, which used that corporate image with the rampant lion in the late 70s. Additionally, the address appears as "Stratton Street, London W.1.". The use of W.1. was very common in printed materials and hotel stationery in the mid-20th century, and it progressively disappeared in the 80s in favor of W1J.
