About this matchbox

This box belongs to Stuckey’s Pecan Shoppes, one of the most iconic roadside chains in the United States, founded in 1937 and closely tied to American road trip culture. It belongs to a time when highways, paper maps, and stops at roadside shops were an essential part of the journey. In addition to pecan candy, Stuckey’s sold souvenirs, drinks, and tourist maps, becoming an icon of road tourism in post-war America.

Things that make me think that the box is from the earliest era of Stuckey’s: the aesthetics of the box with handwritten typography, carriages, and muted colors. As I discover, it was from the mid/late 1950s that the famous turquoise roofs associated with the brand began to appear, and probably that’s when the new designs of the matchboxes emerged. Also, in this rebranding, they eliminated the expression “Pecan Shoppes” and focused more on the roadside/gas station chain. Therefore, although I might be taking a gamble, I would say the box is from between 1945-1955.
