About this matchbox
This box Globos 1783 belongs to a collection of 15 original matchboxes from 1968 designed by Cruz Novillo for the Globos de Fósforos del Pirineo series. They were sold in tobacconists either individually or in a case that contained all 15 balloon models. It was common for this designer to create collectible matchboxes as he had a wide reputation.
The curious thing about this reinterpreted balloon in the box is that it was super decorated because it was both a scientific experiment and a public spectacle, almost real propaganda for Louis XVI. The illustrator's reinterpretation is much more sober compared to the illustrations we have from that era.
José María Cruz Novillo, normally known as Cruz Novillo, was a Spanish sculptor, engraver, painter, and designer known for designing some of the most recognizable logos in Spain including those for Correos, the newspaper El Mundo, as well as Renfe, Psoe, etc. In fact, he has designed so many key logos that he has a documentary called The Man Who Designed Spain.
