About this matchbox
Upon seeing this box from El Mesón del Gran Makuku, I thought it was more of a joke than a restaurant due to its name, design, and absurd texts. But having a real address in Madrid, I deduced that the inn probably did exist. Searching in every possible way on the internet, I found a reference in the Revista Triunfo no. 523 published on October 7, 1972 where this restaurant is mentioned in passing as the setting for an interview with the singer Miguel Vargas: "At the Gran Makuku, a wild tavern on San Vicente Street, where we have arranged to talk again (...)".
Finally, proof that it really existed! What a shame not to find anything else; I would have liked to know the actual menu they served because I doubt it included "fire waters, mokotiledoneos, sublime hippos, and hipekakuanos". I love imagining how bizarre the place must have been; this has me super intrigued. I hope to find more information.
