About this matchbox

Part of a series of tourist boxes from provinces/places in Spain. It features the Ría de Vigo, one of the most iconic maritime landscapes of Galicia, in the northwest of Spain. It is part of the Rías Baixas and extends from the Atlantic inland, protected by the Cíes Islands, which act almost like a natural barrier against the ocean.

In the Strait of Rande located in the Ría de Vigo, the famous Battle of Rande occurred in 1702, where a Spanish-French fleet loaded with riches from America was attacked by the English and Dutch. This gave rise to the legend of the sunken treasure of Rande, which even inspired Jules Verne in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. In the novel, Captain Nemo obtains gold from sunken ships in the Bay of Vigo.

I'll see if I can find another box from the series to better contextualize. I'll keep you updated.
