About this matchbox

It is part of a series of tourist boxes from provinces/places in Spain. It shows the Ría de Vigo, one of the most emblematic maritime landscapes of Galicia, in the northwest of Spain. It is part of the Rías Baixas and enters from the Atlantic inland, protected by the Cíes Islands, which act almost like a natural barrier against the ocean.

In the Rande strait located in the Ría de Vigo, the famous Battle of Rande took place in 1702, where a Hispano-French fleet laden with riches from America was attacked by the English and Dutch. From there, the legend of the sunken treasure of Rande was born, which even inspired Jules Verne in Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. In the novel, Captain Nemo obtains gold from sunken ships in the bay of Vigo.

Let's see if I can find any more boxes from the series to better contextualize. I will keep you updated.
