About this matchbox

The Café de la Iberia boasts of having been founded in 1879 and still occupies one of the most privileged corners of the Plaza Mayor of Chinchón. For over a century, it has witnessed locals, travelers, tourists, and curious onlookers drawn to one of the most beautiful and recognizable squares in the Community of Madrid. For centuries, this space has served as a market, a stage for popular festivities, and even a bullring, surrounded by its unmistakable wooden balconies.

Local tradition says that some bullfighters would dress there before heading to the square, something that perfectly fits the historical atmosphere that the building still retains. It is surprising that an establishment that has seen entire generations pass by continues to occupy the same privileged corner more than a century later. This box is dated roughly between 1980-1995, which we deduce from the phone number without the prefix "91" that became mandatory in the 90s.

I admit that I have a weakness for matches from places that still exist. The next time I pass through Chinchón, I will surely stop by for a drink at the Café de la Iberia and, who knows, perhaps I will find another story behind this little box. If I manage to uncover something interesting, I will return here to share it.
